Organically grown food has been around for centuries but has only recently become popular, not only as a way of eating, but as a lifestyle in general. Eating an organic diet usually goes hand in hand with a respect for the planet, for animals and a desire to live a more balanced, harmonized life. The rise in popularity of organic food has followed that of the push for better recycling practices and more care regarding the environment and global warming.


OrganicDespite the amount of media attention given to the organic food movement, there is a lot of confusion and misinformation about the whole subject. When deciding to buy an organic product, it is important for the consumer to know exactly what they should be looking for in terms of certification. Food producers may simply label their product as organic either in a move to fool the consumer into buying it, or from a genuine lack of knowledge about what actually makes a food organic. For this reason, there are guidelines to be followed and certifications that must be obtained in order for something to be labelled organic, whether it is a food, beauty or any other type of product. It is only by knowing what they are looking for, that the consumer can be sure of getting the real deal.

One of the biggest deterrents of buying organic products is the fact that it is generally more expensive than ‘regular’ food. Although this is true, often the price difference is very little and the benefits of eating the organic food must be considered. For many, the fact that their food will be free of pesticides, residues and chemicals is well worth the slightly more expensive price tag. The fact that the food is purer benefits the body in a number of ways and studies have shown that eating an organic diet is most beneficial to young children, whose bodies are unable to tolerate chemicals as well as an adult. By not taking in so many unwelcome additives, the body becomes cleaner and is able to rid itself of toxins, allowing the immune system to function at an optimal level. In addition to this, it is a fact that organic fruits and vegetables contain up to 300% more nutrients than inorganic food, meaning that every bite of food packs a powerful punch, further boosting our immunity and increasing energy and vitality.

So how does the consumer actually make the switch to eating organically? Fortunately, many large grocery chains have embraced the organic food movement making it easier for the shopper to start introducing it into the diet gradually. One of the biggest hurdles in deciding to buy organic food may be more in the way the food appears as, without the ‘benefit’ of growth hormones and genetic modification, the food will often appear smaller and therefore less appealing. However, for those that get past this issue, the reward will certainly be in the way the food tastes. Some even believe that an organic diet is good for those wanting to lose weight due to the fact that the body is more easily satisfied with less, the food that they eat being so much more flavorful and nourishing. And, of course, by experiencing an overall feeling of wellness that occurs from embracing this healthier style of eating, the person may even feel inclined to exercise more and make healthy, long term changes to other areas of their life.
