Fibrocystic breast disease PDF Print E-mail
Question : I HAVE been suffering from fibrocystic breast disease since last November. Can you advise me on what to do to reduce the discomfort? Can you give me an overview of this disease?
Answer : FIBROCYSTIC breast disease involves common, benign changes to the tissues of the breast.
The cause is not completely understood but the changes are believed to be associated with ovarian hormones since the condition usually subsides with menopause, and may vary in consistency during the menstrual cycle.
The symptoms of fibrocystic breast disease are:
• A dense, irregular and bumpy "cobblestone" consistency in breast tissue
• Breast discomfort that is persistent, or that occurs off and on (intermittent)
• Breast(s) feel full
• Dull, heavy pain and tenderness
• Premenstrual tenderness and swelling
• Breast discomfort improves after each menstrual period
• Nipple sensation changes, itching
Restrict your consumption of dietary fat to about 25 per cent of the total daily calorie intake.
Your diet should include plenty of fruits, vegetables and grains.
One of the most important dietary changes you can make is eliminating all forms of caffeine-containing foods from your diet.
This includes foods such as chocolate, sodas, and coffee and tea. Reducing sugar and salt may also help reduce overall symptoms.
Decrease sources of oestrogen from your diet such as meats as they can worsen your symptoms.
You may try taking evening primrose oil. Scientific studies show that regular intake of evening primrose oil can help ease problems relating to women's menstrual cycle as well as skin problems.
You may also supplement your diet with vitamins B. It may help to decrease the severity of your symptoms. Other nutrients that may be beneficial include magnesium and vitamin E.
