It may come as a shock to realise that as many as one in four women will suffer from osteoporosis in their lifetime. What may be even more shocking is the fact that this disease does not have any symptoms and usually the first sign that there is something wrong is when the individual falls and fractures a bone. Osteoporosis affects all bone, but fractures are generally more common in the wrist, hips and spine. This debilitating disease, in which the bone becomes brittle and thin, can also cause a reduction in height as the spine contracts, and general loss of quality of life.
