Maintaining a low blood glucose level is important for any person, even if they don’t suffer from any type of medical condition because keeping those levels low will prevent them from developing medical conditions that can be life threatening. If a patient has diabetes or heart disease it is crucial to their well being that they maintain a healthy level of blood glucose and try to reduce that number as much as possible. Having high levels of blood glucose can be inherited by some people, especially if both of their parents suffer from high levels of blood glucose, but others develop it over the years because of the diet that they eat.
The following is a list of some of the most common foods used to help lower blood glucose levels:
- Cinnamon
- Broccoli
- Vinegar
- Tomatoes
- Oatmeal
- Fruits
- Whole grains
- Vegetables
Anyone suffering from heart disease, diabetes, or high levels of blood glucose should avoid fast food as much as possible if not entirely. Eating fast food, even on an irregular basis, can increase blood glucose levels to the point of developing a serious medical condition. After you eat breakfast and can’t wait until lunch you should snack on nuts during the day. Eating nuts instead of popcorn, crackers, or potato chips will help to reduce your blood glucose levels. Doctors even recommend roasting your own nuts. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and roast nuts for roughly 10 minutes. This helps to reduce the amount of oils on the nuts and reduce your blood glucose levels.
When eating breakfast; avoid pancakes, hot pockets, croissants, white bread, doughnuts and biscuits. All of these foods will raise your blood glucose levels. There is nothing wrong with eating cereal for breakfast, just as long as it isn’t laden with high levels of sugar. Some cereals are incredibly high in fiber, which help people with high blood glucose levels lower those levels and remain healthy. Yogurt is a great food to eat in the morning for breakfast. Think about adding some granola to the yogurt, which should be low in fat, to help lower your blood glucose levels.
Shockingly sweet potatoes can help to lower a person’s high levels of blood glucose. These potatoes help the cells in the body respond to insulin, which helps move sugar from a person’s blood stream. Add the sweet potato to a salad or make a sweet potato soup or dice the potato up and mix it with brown rice, also helpful in lowering high levels of blood glucose.
Our next tip isn’t exactly a food, its water. Doctors recommend that people with high levels of blood glucose should drink plenty of water during the day. Drink at least eight glasses of water per day to help flush harmful toxins from the body, aid in weight loss, and keep the patient’s skin healthy. Water is also healthier to drink than soda, iced tea, or other drinks with a lot of sugar in them. |

Social anxiety is a disorder that affects thousands of people across the country but its exact cause has yet to be determined by doctors and scientists. There are however a handful of theories that try to explain how the disorder becomes prominent in patients that exhibit the symptoms. First, anxiety is defined as a psychological and physiological state that is characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional and behavioral items. When these items combine they create an uneasy feeling or feeling of fear in the patient. Many doctors consider anxiety to be a normal reaction to a high amount of stress in one’s life. The most natural way to cure anxiety or social anxiety is to reduce the amount of stress one deals with during the course of a day or a week.
The first theory for the cause of social anxiety is that the disorder is genetically predisposed. This means that sensitivity to criticism or social scrutiny can be passed down from one generation to another just like hair color and eye color are inherited. For instance, a child that has two very shy parents might inherit a genetic code for shyness that over a period of time can amplify into a social anxiety disorder. Many people with social anxiety disorder will have a high resting heart rate. A resting heart rate is the beats that your heart makes while a person is relaxing (not running or walking or exercising). A patient with a social anxiety disorder will also exhibit an increased heart rate during times of stress.
Another theory for the cause of social anxiety disorder is development. Doctors and scientists have discovered that this disorder develops at different stages of a person’s life. For instance, at seven months old babies develop a fear of strangers. This development of fear does not take place anytime before the seven month mark. Separation anxiety occurs in three year old children leaving their parents for the first time to attend preschool while children ages six to eight have trouble being alone. As children grow into their early to mid teens they seek out solitude when they are dealing with physical appearance and performance in school. All of these are examples of different stages of a social anxiety disorder.
Chemical imbalances are another known cause of a social anxiety disorder. Patients suffering from long term symptoms of a social anxiety disorder typically have some sort of chemical imbalance in their brain. The key neurotransmitters produced in the brain that help people respond to stress are Serotonin, Norepinephrine, and GABA. If there is an imbalance of any one of these chemicals then the patient will suffer from a social anxiety disorder. If a patient does have a chemical imbalance in their brain there is treatment available to them. The most common way to treat an imbalance is with prescription drugs. Prescription drugs will restore the chemical balance in the brain and help to reduce the symptoms of social anxiety to the point where the patient can return to a normal life. |

Medicare is defined as social insurance program in the United States that is administered by the United States government which provides health insurance coverage to people that are 65 years of age or older. The Social Security Act of 1965 created Medicare and the first beneficiary was former United States President Harry S. Truman when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the bill into law on July 30, 1965. Medicare is administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which is a component of the Department of Health and Human Services. Coming in the year 2010 there will be a handful of changes to the way Medicare is run in the United States.
One of the major changes that Medicare will go through in the year 2010 is that the old plans of A through G will be removed from the system and new plans A through G will be instituted into the system. The change that will not be made is that people already in the old A through G plans will be grandfathered into the system and will stay within the old A through G plans. Anyone signing up for Medicare in 2010 will be entered into the new A through G plans. In an interesting turn of events, people entering the new A through G plans will be in plans that are exactly the same as the old A through G plans. Anyone sitting in the A through G plans at the time of the change (June 1, 2010) will be in what is called closed risk pools. Anyone in a closed risk pool will tend to pay higher prices for their Medicare supplement insurance coverage.
There are a couple of plans that will be eliminated altogether once Medicare enacts its changes on June 1, 2010. The plans that will be eliminated altogether are E, H, I and J. The preventive care benefit and the at-home recovery benefits will also be eliminated when Medicare enacts its changes in 2010. Medicare Supplement Plan M and Plan N will be introduced to Medicare on June 1, 2010 to replace Plan F. These two plans bring a $20 co-pay for doctor visits and a $50 co-pay for emergency room visits. A hospice care benefits is also going to be added all Medicare Supplement Plans.
Each different Medicare plan offered by Medicare has different benefits for the elderly to choose from when signing up for a Medicare plan. These plans must follow all state and federal laws that protect consumers. Prices for the same plan vary from state to state because they are sold by different insurance companies across the country. Other plan changes being offered by Medicare include increased rates for deductibles, the reduction of PFFS plans, and other plan changes. November 15, 2009 begins the open enrollment period for people wanting to make changes to their Medicare plans and the open enrollment period ends on December 31, 2009 for the 2010 changes. Subscribers are encouraged to review their Medicare plans as soon as possible to make sure they do not need to make any changes. |

There are two types of people living in the society of America these days; Type A personality people and Type B personality people. Type A is more prone to developing hypertension. Type A people tend to always be in a competitive mode, which includes not listening to others and always wanting to control the conversation. Type A personalities are always on the go and never like to relax for an extended period of time. These characteristics tend to cause this type of person to develop high blood pressure, or hypertension. The fast pace that the Type A personality lives by causes his or her body to trigger hormonal glands that will pump too much adrenaline and cortisol into their body.
Type A personalities have blood fat in their body, high levels of cholesterol, and blood clotting chemicals that can lead a person to have a stroke. The most common traits witnessed in Type A personalities that help to develop hypertension include some of the following:
- Always working on unrealistic deadlines.
- Has little tolerance in almost everything particularly with colleagues, friends and even family.
- Defined work is prioritized over everything.
- Not willing to cooperate with other work groups, but instead acts authoritatively.
- Unpleasant to be with due to persistence in trying to have his way, often using persuasive actions and speeches.
- Constantly wanting to butt in during conversations, hence, not a good listener.
When people behave in the way mentioned above the Type A personality puts pressure on him or herself to go along with the pressures already placed on the person because of work or school. A Type A person’s health is affected in the following ways:
- High cholesterol with the need for cholesterol-lowering drugs.
- High triglycerides constricting the blood vessels, which may eventually lead to heart attack or stroke.
- High blood pressure with the need for drugs even with the usual unwarranted side effects.
- Elevation of blood sugar level leading to diabetes disease.
- High blood-clotting chemicals making them candidates to have a stroke.
Type B personalities are people that act exactly the opposite of Type A personalities. Type B personalities don’t want to be in the limelight, they don’t want to control the conversation, they aren’t looking to be the best at everything they are involved in, they aren’t over competitive and they aren’t always on the go. Every now and then a Type B personality will want to sit down and relax. Type B personalities are less prone to developing hypertension, high blood pressure, which makes them live healthier and longer lives.
Type A personalities suffering from hypertension should consult their physician prior to beginning medication, an exercise regimen, or a new diet. The doctor will be able to tell the patient whether or not he or she can handle exercise or a certain form of medication to help reduce their high blood pressure levels. Type A personalities can also reduce their blood pressure by changing their lifestyle habits such as always being on the go and always having a competitive spirit. |

Anxiety is defined as a psychological and physiological state that is characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional and behavioral parts of the brain. When these four items combine together they can cause an unpleasant feeling of worry, fear, or uneasiness. Anxiety is a form of generalized mood disorder that can occur without any definite reason or stimulus found to cause the anxiety. In most cases anxiety is considered to be a normal reaction to stress in a person’s life. Stress can be brought on by events taking place at work, at school, or at home. If a person lets their anxiety problems get out of control then they might develop what is known as an anxiety disorder.
Controlling the anxiety in one’s life can mean the difference between living an easier life day to day and developing an anxiety disorder that takes control of daily activities. Living a life with anxiety can be terrifying and it can be a danger to one’s health as well. Anxiety disorders can get so out of control that people suffer strokes and sometimes even heart attacks as a result of their anxiety. Letting anxiety pile up can also cause extreme tiredness and weakness of the body. One of the best tips provided by experts today when it comes to controlling anxiety is to change one’s thought process.
Changing the thought process can relieve anxiety in a heartbeat. Many people with anxiety disorders think about certain things negatively all the time. They never look at the positive side of the story. If the patient can change his or her thinking habits to be more positive and to improve their response to the object at hand then their anxiety will begin to subside.
There are a variety of reasons why a person might suffer from anxiety and they include genetics, a chemical imbalance, drugs, life changes, stress, tension, the death of a loved one, work, parenting, an unhealthy marriage or relationship, health problems, changing a job or moving to a new residence.
Another way to control one’s anxiety is to avoid items with caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. All of these products can lead to a higher level of anxiety. In some cases, these items are the actual causes of anxiety. Doctors also recommend that patients should laugh as much as possible. Laughter replaces negative emotions with positive ones, lightening a person’s mood, and making them happy for at least five minutes.
Anyone with an anxiety problem should also get as much sleep as possible. Sleep helps people relax and remove stress from their body. If patients do not get enough sleep then they will be more prone to developing stress and anxiety in their lives.
Exercising on a regular basis can also help to control one’s anxiety. Employing a rigorous exercise regimen can help relieve stress and anxiety from the body while also improving the overall health of the patient. Listening to music is another great way to control anxiety. Music can be relaxing and soothing, especially if the patient is listening to their favorite band. Music can help patients relive some of their most favorite times from their past. These are just some of the most common ways to control anxiety in a person’s life. Not everyone’s body will respond to every one of these tips so try a myriad of different things to control anxiety in life. |
