Some women are just plain lucky. They don’t have period cramps that get in the way of their normal daily activities. On the other hand, some women including a vast number of the majority suffer from period cramps that negatively affect their quality of life. The problem becomes debilitating especially during menopause wherein the menstrual period becomes irregular and can occur more often. The good news is that there are ways to deal with period cramps and make it more bearable. In some cases, these tips can even get rid of the problem completely.

Mild Exercise

Cardiovascular exercise like light jogging and walking can also help improve circulation and prevent the occurrence of cramps. Relaxing exercises like yoga and hiking can also help reduce stress levels which can alleviate PMS symptoms including cramps. To make your body stronger and prepare itself from PMS symptoms, make exercise a regular part of your routine.

Supplement with Calcium

Calcium is very important especially for women going through menopause. Supplementing with calcium is one of the most effective ways to deal with period cramps. Calcium has also been shown to prevent menstrual cramps. Just double your calcium intake about one week before your menstrual period and continue this until the end of your period to have optimal effects.

Drink Herbal Tea

One of the most effective ways to deal with period cramps is to drink a soothing cup of herbal tea. The warmth usually helps alleviate the pain and help you relax. This works on the same premise as the popular warm compress being used by many women around the world. Some examples of herbal teas you can use are chamomile, catnip, raspberry and mint. Studies also indicate that relaxation is linked to the severity of menstrual cramps.

Consult Your Doctor

If the period cramps you experience is more unbearable than normal, it may be caused by an underlying health condition that needs to be treated. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional to determine the cause of the abnormal period cramps you’re experiencing. Your doctor can also suggest ways to relieve your period cramps.

Over the Counter Medicine

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen have been proven to provide relief to PMS symptoms like menstrual cramps. Anti-inflammatories work by preventing the production of prostaglandins which are the chemicals that cause cramps. The important thing to remember is to take these before the cramps become severe. The reason for this is because it takes some time for them to build-up and become effective. Consult your doctor if this is a good option for you since some people with health conditions shouldn’t take certain drugs.
