Question: I have started to notice bumps and cellulite on the backs of my thighs and am a little freaked out about it. My mom has really bad cellulite and I am trying to fix the problem before it gets too bad. I’ve seen a product called Fat Girl Slim at some high end department stores that claims to help with cellulite, does it really work? How can a cream reduce cellulite?

Answer: Many women struggle with unsightly cellulite. Dimpling and unevenness of skin’s surface can make women feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. Lately, there has been a wave of products on the market that claim to be able to reduce, or even rid women of their cellulite issues. Fat Girl Slim cream, manufactured by Bliss is one such cream that, according to the official website, uses caffeine in order to slim skin and even tone.

Retailing for about $30, the Bliss website boasts independent, clinical research that found that 87% of women who used Fat Girl Slim saw firming effects, 85% saw slimming effects, and 73% noticed reduced appearance of cellulite. The website encourages users to purchase a device called a “stimulator” to prep the skin to receive the cream, which should be massaged into the skin. Although one can see a full list of ingredients on the website, the active ingredient Fat Girl Slim claims to possess is QuSome-encapsulated caffeine molecules designed to slim problem areas. Caffeine has been shown to reduce swelling and puffiness and is used in several other leading creams aimed at fighting skin issues.

Although Fat Girl Slim is a reasonably priced product that claims to have better-than average results, there is little medical evidence that shows that creams or massaging will help women permanently rid themselves of cellulite. There is also no disclosed information about how much active ingredient is contained in the product or how it penetrates the skin.
