The acai supplement has become increasingly popular in Western culture, with shows like “Dr. Oz” often citing the berry as a type of “super food” that is rich with amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and perhaps most abundantly of all—antioxidants that fight free radicals, thus promoting overall bodily health and the prevention of certain diseases, including cancers. The berry is semi-sweet, but nutritious to eat whole, and it’s found growing on the palm leaves of the acai tree found in South America. The berry is sometimes promoted as a lower-fructose alternative to the very sweet strawberries, raspberries, etc.

Although acai has been used for centuries in traditional South American medicine, there is not yet any conclusive scientific research to demonstrate that an acai supplement can cure or prevent diseases. However, it has been established that the berry has a high amount of antioxidants that are capable of reducing free radicals within the body. Free radicals are associated with a variety of illnesses, including types of cancer, so it’s safe to say acai consumption could assist as a preventative measure. In fact, among all fruits, studies have shown acai may contain some of the highest levels of antioxidants that are available.

An acai supplement can be taken most commonly through edible forms, including granola bars and cereals found at most natural health food locations. In addition, acai is commonly used as a detoxifier. In these instances, acai may be part of a colonic treatment designed to flush out toxins from the digestive tract. The idea is that the antioxidants prevalent in the berry help to cleanse the body, while also infusing the body with acai’s many vitamins and minerals. Such treatments are often available through specialized clinics, or as a treatment that’s administered orally as a drink.

Before taking the acai supplement for detoxification purposes, it’s important to consult with a doctor, as colonic cleansing is not recommended for everyone, and certain variables are important to consider. On the other hand, the berry itself is perfectly safe to consume as a dietary additive, and it can be found in many types of cereals, health bars, and other nutritious diet additives. By adding a high source of antioxidants into your diet, it’s possible to gain a foothold in the prevention of various illnesses.
